An Update

Things that have happened since I last posted:

A donation arrived to help pay for a few of the baby’s toes. Actually, a very good friend of ours bought a few squares for the Super Bowl pool at her office and decided that if she won, the money would be donated to Baby Stanski. One of her squares was a two-time winner, and when she gave the winnings to us, she joked that it was enough to pay for two toes. Now, before anyone gets huffy, Stan and I know that the money spent toward adoption is not for the “purchase” of a baby but rather to pay for the medical and orphanage care our baby received prior to coming home and also for the legal and travel expenses involved in bringing a child to the U.S. and making him a citizen. However, we still have a sense of humor, and we thought this toe analogy was pretty funny. We are so thankful to this dear friend that we will name two of the baby’s toes after her. We haven’t decided which toes, but The One Who Had Roast Beef and The One Who Had None are on the short list. Seriously, Nan, we thank you again from the bottom of our hearts.

Stan’s sister, Ardra, has agreed to help us with the cost of printing and publishing our fundraiser cookbooks! We are very excited to finish the cookbook project, and hope to sell them sometime this spring. Thank you to everyone who submitted recipes and a big thank you to Ardra for helping us to increase our profits!

I joined my parents’ church. I don’t know what took me so long. Mom and Dad have been members there for four years. We love the minister. For the first time in my life, I actually look forward to the sermons and take inspiration from them. The music is also fantastic. Our church has a gospel choir, a chancel choir, and a bell chorus. The members of these choirs are unbelievably talented. I get a weekly dose of goose bumps. Our church is racially diverse, and there are other bi-racial families, so we are especially pleased to have at least one place where our children will see other families like theirs. This is not always easy to come by.

Mom and Dad have arrived in Florida for their annual month-long visit. We are insanely jealous. Right about now they are probably sipping margaritas at the Oyster Bar. Sickening, isn’t it?

Stan and I went to Mansfield for our annual Valentine’s Day dinner with Alison & Jeromy and Jen & Chad. A good time was had by all. (If you ever take any journalism classes, they will tell you that you must never use that phrase. As soon as they tell you that, it becomes irresistible to do so.) We especially enjoyed seeing Alison and Jeromy’s new baby (Zanna) as well as Jen and Chad’s new baby (Jagger the puppy, shown above).

I would go with the one that ate roast beef. That is a very important toe.
